2011
4 April: Future updates on Pinny will be on the Skyla/Coby page here.
30 March: Pinny is definitely the leader of the baby pack and walks with a swagger. He is a great eater and has a nice big belly after eating. He will often leave his rib after the walk at nighttime and inspect what the other babies have before returning to his rib. He is around 30 kilos now and is getting heavy to pick up. His paws are huge now and yesterday when we let the babies out for a walk he spotted a peacock and chased the bird as it honked and screamed all the way down the old exit road while we chased after him!
22 March: Pinny is starting to look more and more like a big lion. He enjoys stalking the babies on walks and even if the attack itself is not that impressive, he is really good at crouching down and hiding in the grass. He is no longer a bully but actually really sweet and lets us now take naps with him. It is very cozy to cuddle him. On a walk this week he climbed a tree so high that he needed help to get down. At least he learnt the getting up part!
15 March: Pinny is going onto 16-weeks now and doing very well. He weighs 23 kilograms and is becoming darker in colour. He is still spotty, and can also be described as naughty sometimes. He loves the walks and is always venturing off to find new places and smells. Chewing sticks is also a great hobby, and he has starting to climb trees as well.
8 March: Pinny is now 15 weeks old and huge! We have changed his feeding, so he is now on a full rib in the morning, 600 grams of meat at mid-day, and a full rib at nighttime. Pinny and Coby are often seen doing the “smelly face” and are using their senses a lot. During the handlings most people love the babies because they are smaller so Pinny is always coming over for attention and tries to play with everyone.
1 March: Pinny is doing great and also went on an excursion to the vet with the other babies but he was not a happy baby because the vet had to pull out a long thorn from his paw. He is fine now though! He is still bullying the smaller babies when he wants to but they are certainly standing up to him too. He loves to play with a toy rope we gave him and people play with it with him during handlings. All babies do really well on their walks and are finally walking into the enclosure now rather than getting distracted and wandering around the car park and serval enclosure.
23 February: Every morning when we walk Pinny he always runs over to the serval enclosure and climbs up onto the fence and says hello to the servals and has long chats with the big 4 cubs as well! He even has allowed Skyla to share his bowl of meat on the odd occasion but never lets anyone near him when he is drinking his bottle! Pinny is behaving very well during handlings and loves the attention. He is getting darker in colour and his head is narrow and long.
16 February: This big boy is great. He is getting bigger day by day and acting like the king of his enclosure. He loves to bully around the smaller babies and is always jumping on them or biting them when he can. He is always the first finished with his meals. Pinny, Skyla and Coby can all climb onto the little platform in their enclosure (the one in the car park) and sit up there proudly in a row.
7 February: Pinny is loving the change from an only cub to having smaller babies to play with. All the babies are on the same feeding and walking schedule. When Skyla and Coby went to the vet for their injections, Pinny was screaming and calling for them the whole time, and upon their return he bounded to them giving lots of kisses and hugs and all were very happy to be reunited. He has a narrow head with big ears and weighs around 12 kilos (26.4 pounds).
2 February: Pinny is growing up so fast his ears don’t match his head! He is still on 2 bottles a day and 2 bowls of meat and he loves the meat! He is a very slow drinker but when it comes to the meat, he chows it down. When he goes on his walks every morning he always stops to say hello to the older cubs on his way down to the loop and they have a chat through the fence and smell each other. Aww very cute and loving!
25 January: Pinny is learning to adapt to not being alone. He is on a meal plan of 2 bottles a day of cub milk and porridge, and 2 bowls of meat with porridge and is doing very at eating. He is doing handlings and really enjoying the attention. He is now 2 months old and weighs 8.3 kilos. He makes a lot of strange noises and is practicing his baby roar for everyone to hear.
18 January: Pinny has become very vocal, and loves to scream and call to everyone who wanders by. He is getting lots of attention from the new babies, and we can see he really enjoys having some lions to play with and socialise in a way that we can’t offer. He is an excellent walker, and every day we extend his walk longer and longer. He has become much better at drinking and lays down like a proper lion. He and Coby love to play while Skyla watches on at the silly boys wrestling around. Pinny spends half his time in Adam and Jagger’s old enclosure and in the smaller one next to the restaurant.
11 January: Pinny is getting bigger by the day and weighs 7.08kg -so is big for his age. He has learnt to do the steps around the boardwalk and is practicing his roar often, but it sounds more like a squeak! He is drinking the porridge milk mixture 4 times a day but we are introducing him to mini ribs, and now that he has the taste for it he loves them. He is lonely being the only cub in the litter, but he very pleased with all the attention he gets because of that.
3 January: Pinny is growing so rapidly he is now 5.610 kilograms (12.34 Pounds) and just over 5 weeks old. He is on 50mls of porridge mixed with 175mls of milk per feed and is still an excellent drinker. We’ve started handlings with him for children two years and under. He is also starting his walks around the car park and is very good at following and knows his name. He is getting darker in colour and he can see a lot clearer now and is not bumping into walls so much.

20 December: Pinny is now 4.4kgs and growing strong. He is still uncoordinated but getting used to walking around and building his leg muscles. He now drinks 180ml per feed and drinks it all straight down without a fuss. He now has his teeth coming through on the top and bottom, and is learning to keep his claws in. His eyes are also becoming clearer and can focus better. He now goes to the toilet by himself as well. Still no babies from Savannah yet so we are still waiting on them to come for Pinny to have friends to play with but us volunteers certainly give him loads of attention.
14 December: Our beautiful baby boy is looking amazing and has stolen the hearts of everyone. He is the best eater Janice has seen in a long time, and he hardly cries. He is drinking 120ml every 3 hours and drinks it all straight down without any fuss. He has been de-wormed as well. He now weighs 3.870kg. On nice days we put him outside and he spends the day in the fresh air, enjoying the view of the ocean.
30 November: First photos of our new baby boy! His name is Pinny. Isn’t he gorgeous?
29 November: EXCITING NEWS! Jenny and Nebbie (pictured below several days before the birth) brought into this world a beautiful baby boy! He was born last Monday, 22 November, and today he was taken out of his enclosure and brought up to Janice’s house. He is a healthy 2 kilos and is very clean and cute. He has lots of dark spots on his head and is very light in colour. No name as of yet but we will keep you updated!
